The crowd cheers throughout the break across the temporarily empty stage, louder than the band, that roar of voice and hand and feet, a lost echo against concrete.

Offstage an acoustic guitar is tuned and then the songwriter carries it out back onstage. I know this song as well as he does, as well as the crowd.

“You sing one, then I’ll sing one.”

He steps back from the microphone.

Why encores? So that we can sample the end and return.
