Socratic Method

2019.01.08

We’d been screen-sharing for over two hours, our two screens a portal of noise and audio between the rooms, both logged into the same server, trying to debug a problem, the screen occasionally an infinite looping cascade of mirrors. Neither of us knew the solution, although he had more direct experience with the issue (how to re-issue a security certificate that had expired 47 minutes earlier). It was the first major snag we’d run into in the technical responsibilities that I was inheriting. It was not the first time I’d helped fix something with the Socratic method.

I wanted to say how much I was going to miss working with him – but that wasn’t quite it. It was more complicated than that. I would probably be missing some easier part of myself, if I was going to be missing our interactions.
